You can tell when Nick Warren’s on the decks. The music emanating from the man is that perfect club mix of driving percussion and soaring musicality, bursting out of the speakers, soaking everyone in melody, drenching them in sound. On the floor, where it really matters, his crowd experience all the peaks and troughs that make his music so unique. Locking on early, you’ll hear his deeper take on house, which morphs, as the club mood changes, into harder territory, music for sweating and losing yourself to. And at that point when the light are low, when smoke fills the room and people are dancing on instinct, that’s when the melodies start to rise over the top, washing the worries and exertions of life away, completing the club experience. That’s why Nick Warren is so respected, because he knows how to truly work a club, and a crowd, delivering again and again. That’s what comes with vision and, just as importantly, experience.

Nick, a music obsessive who grew up on punk, reggae and pop was, like so many DJs turned onto the power of house music in the late 80s. Living in Bristol, he’d been playing tunes for a few years before, running his own club night, Wiggle, in the city with a friend and he took immediately to this new sound coming from America. In 1990, a new house club, Vision took the city by storm and in a perfect bit of timing, he was offered the chance to play in the upstairs room, spinning weird downbeat Balearic records and mixing house with music by The Clash and Frank Sinatra. Catching the attention of a group of guys who had their own band, he was roped in to tour with them as their DJ when they went to play America. The group was Massive Attack.

As their official DJ, he began working on music of his own. Joining up with another Bristol producer, Jody Wisternoff in 1994 to form Way Out West, they recorded the seminal ‘Ajare’ single together, a huge progressive house club hit. Three years later, and with the duo now signed to Deconstruction, it was re-released, this time breaking into the charts and finally, the nation’s consciousness. Then came ‘The Gift’. With a memorable hook line culled from an old hardcore track, its mix of ambient soundscapes and breaks won it universal plaudits, sending Nick and Jody onto Top of the Pops and catapulting Nick into the league of the superstar DJ. Their three albums, ‘Blue’ and “Intensify” and took every single one of the pair’s influences and shaped them into a groundbreaking collection of tracks that stayed in the CD players of the UK and beyond for a long, long time. Their third album “Don’t Look Now” was released in 2005, which they toured as a live band with Faithless. Album Four We Love Machine has just been released.
And yet all this history has been eclipsed by Nick’s present: a DJ career spanning a decade and a half via his lengthy residency superclub Cream and then every self respecting club on the planet. His sound, which is entirely unique, sourced by forging relationships with cutting edge producers all over the globe, most of his set still made up of unsigned new electronic talent. This is no better represented than in the continuing series of compilations. “Back to Mine”, Renaissance his eighth Global Underground album, this time from the wild environs of Lima making him the most featured artists for this huge compilation series.

He has also taken over A&R at Hope Recordings as the final link in the chain that allows him to represent the sound that he has so long championed.

Nick Warren isn’t for standing still, he loves what he’s doing too much for that, but you know that already.

Stockholm, Sweden. He started travelling around the globe more than a decade ago and quickly made himself well known as “the Swedish techno soul” of the electronic music world. Joel’s passion for music really started in his early adolescence when he began attending a music school and spending all his time at the piano and keyboard.
In the early nineties the new phenomena “Rave” caught his attention and his interest for electronic music and recording own material led to large sums of money being spent on drum machines, samplers and synthesizers. Soon the first 12″ techno track was released, a collaboration between him and school friend ADAM BEYER. For over 3 years, 3 times a month, Joel was warming up, closing and playing along-side many of the important DJ’s on the national and international circuit.
Moving back to Stockholm in 1997 Joel had more time to focus on his productions and in early 1998 his own imprint INSIDE RECORDS was born. In the recent years Joel has focused on his DJ career more than ever which has led to a hectic touring schedule. His productions and releases are also getting more attention.
In 2007 we saw a string of releases and collaborations from Joel with other top artists, but the most important release was of course his artist Album “The Observer” on Harthouse. He integrateded Ableton live into his DJ set and used the mixer 3D from Allen&Heath to combine the two systems. The result was fantastic. He will definitely be known as one of the few who more than rode but created the wave of electronic dance music and he will always be mentioned regarding Swedish techno!
This year has been another great year for Joel.
Before this years Winter Music Conference he got asked by his friend DJ/Producer Nic Fancuilli to mix a compilation with tracks from his Label Saved Records. It got featured as cover cd with the Magazine IDJ doing a WMC Special. And 30.000 units got spread around the world.
At the moment Joel is working on a album due to be released 2010. He will also continue his residency on the Drumcode label parties that are going to go on tour next year starting in January in London at Ministry of Sound…

Benny Rodrigues has infiltrated himself in the list of famous Dutch top DJs in a very short time. This Rotterdam born and raised talent with Portuguese blood understands the art of using the funk, of getting the dancing floor full and the room to its feet. Although confessed because of its groovy/funky (deep) tech-house sound with lots of detroit, minimal and acid influences, he also knows that he has to do some work now and then and he knows how he must use that hatchet, what results in a particularly strong and delightful portion of techno which remains above everything well digestible. Besides his huge amount of dj-gigs, Benny’s main focus nowadays is to produce music wich reflects his tipycal edge sound, so the rest of the world will get to know and experience where Benny Rodrigues musically stands for. With releases scheduled on Darren Emerson’s (ex-Underworld) Underwater Records and other very interesting upcoming projects he’s setting himself quite a good step in the right direction!

Shinedoe started performing as a dancer at an early age of fifteen. Inspired by her African heritage and influenced by music of the early 1980s, she performed at clubs, on videos and in bands such as Quazar and Warp 9, to name a few.

After performing for four years as a dancer throughout Europe, she decided to stop and focus on other things such as buying electronic music records for personal use, and producing mix tapes for friends. Her music then was a mixture of US garage, Detroit techno and house. As a result of the mix tapes, her first gig was arranged by friends at Club “Ja” in Amsterdam. Then she seriously started mixing music at the age of 19, getting her debut booking in 1995 at the VIP-club in Amsterdam, where she rocked the place and became resident DJ. Also, she was offered a residency position at Club Stalker in Haarlem.

Ever since 1995, she played on all the big festivals, clubs and parties in the Netherlands, from Dance Valley to Awakenings. Bookings also came from various countries such as Germany, Italy, Sweden, China, Bosnia, Israel, Slovenia and Croatia.

From around 1997 until 2000 she played drum ‘n bass under the pseudonym Black Magic Queen to much success. After a while she decided to focus on tech-house and techno only.

Shinedoe spins a variety of funky groove techno sets with tech-house influences. She likes to keep her sets interesting by combining different flows. The crowd adores her because she knows how to rock the place.

In 2001, she started her own night called Inmotion at clubs Paradiso and Amuse in Amsterdam, where she has been inviting quality (inter)national DJs to perform.

Her debut release “Dilemma/Alpha” on 100% Pure Records was played and supported around the globe by the likes of Sven Väth, Laurent Garnier, Richie Hawtin, Steve Rachmad and Ricardo Villalobos. She also runs her own label Intacto Records, in collaboration with 100% Pure owner Dylan Hermelijn. This label was launched in September 2004.

Shinedoe released her debut album ‘Sound Travelling’ in September 2006.

From the first time he heard a DJ beat-mix acid house in 1987, Thomas Schumacher immediately knew that he wanted to be a part of dance music culture.
With a strong foundation in Detroit Techno and House, Thomas has been an active – and eclectic – producer and DJ for over 17 years, and is one of the leading players on the international DJ circuit.
His international breakthough came on legendary techno label Bush Records in 1997 with the track “When I Rock”; unique at the time for fusing Techno with a distinctive hip hop sample: In the same year Thomas was commissioned to compose the music for a staging of Shakespeare’s Hamlet at the Schauspielhaus in Bonn, and he ended the year with his first solo artist album Electric Ballroom. Mixmag hailed it “Techno’s funk packed answer to (Daft Punk’s) Homework.”
He followed this up with extensive international touring, numerous productions and remixes, and two more artist albums: Electric Avenue and Home, rated by de:Bug magazine as “…a bloody deep masterpiece”. Soon after the release of Home, Thomas signed with Get Physical Music. The affiliation with Get Physical is set to continue in 2010 when Thomas releases his new album for the label in March.
Nowadays Thomas is a proud family man, and while he still spends plenty of his time in the arrivals and departure lounges of airports all over the world, he is honoured to travel to every corner of the globe to do his thing, and showcase the diversity that has become his trademark.

Like a lot of dance music producers, Berlin’s Ellen Allien has had her hands in just about every aspect of her field. Allien’s immersion into dance music began during an extended stay in London, at the height of the acid house phenomenon. Shortly after returning home she got into DJing, and by 1993 she had spun at Fischlabor, Tresor, and a number of other significant clubs. Throughout the remainder of the ’90s, she hosted programs on Berlin’s Kiss FM, worked at the Delirium record shop, operated a label called Braincandy, and threw a number of parties called BPitch Control, which led to her label of the same name. She became a noted producer and issued a series of full-lengths – Stadtkind (2001), Berlinette (2003), Thrills (2005) and together with Apparat Orchestra of Bubbles (2006).

France’s most wanted radio host and selector, Ivan Smagghe stands at the crossroads between glamorous parisian hype and musical integrity.

His Test radio show and compilations imposed a new vision of leftfield electronica on Radio Nova and his programming for the two past years has been a faultless example of quality eclecticness. Though Smagghe hails from the early days of the Parisian underground – both through his connection with the defunct Rough Trade record shop and remixing contributions on various formats – he came back to music production in 2001 by launching his own Set imprint.

Timo Maas Live @ Dissonanze 2009

September 22, 2009

Timo Maas Live @ Dissonanze 2009
Mirror

Self-styled purveyor of ‘percussive wet funk’. Producer and remixer of more than 85 productions in three years, including classics like Orinoko’s ‘Mama Konda’ (Top 20 UK & US club charts). DJ’d everywhere from Germany’s ‘Love Parade’ to London’s ‘Turnmills’ and Chicago’s ‘Karma’. Not to mention a slew of forthcoming releases in Y2K, kick-started by the wickedly minimal ‘Der Schieber’, out March 27th on Perfecto Imprint 48K. Timo Maas is a man with a mission, a man sick of the “cheesy shit” that clogs up the clubs and the charts, stifling creativity: “I like the idea of building up a unique sound, of working with different sounds to create something new and fresh. I suppose I may always be the underdog but at least I won’t have sold out like some other German acts.

” Re-rewind to the early eighties: Timo, born and brought up in Hanover, Germany, is just thirteen – but already storming the decks: “I used to play at my friends’ house parties, whilst they were all too busy snogging each other.” And as both Timo and the crowds steadily grew over the next few years, he soon found himself playing the biggest commercial clubs in his hometown – yet still managed to drop the odd credible track into the mix…

It was Timo’s residency at The Tunnel in Hamburg, at the time one of the biggest clubs in Germany, that marked his breakthrough. Teaming up with resident Gary D, the duo produced an “aggressive trance” record that would prove a landmark in his career. ‘Die Herdplatte’ instantly won him acclaim overseas and led to his current involvement with hope recordings. Soon he was booked everywhere from ‘Lakota’ in Bristol to ‘Energy Parade’ in Switzerland, Austria, and of course his native Germany.

Lucky he’d quit his 9 year long job selling mobile phones for German Telecom by then… After the success of ‘Die Herdplatte’ Timo spent his apprenticeship at the renowned Peppermint Jam studios, learning “everything from recording to distribution”, and hooked up with resident producers Andy and Martin to record under the moniker Kinetic A.T.O.M. The track was the irresistibly funky ‘Borg Destroyer’, which sold an amazing 8000 copies – unaided by any marketing, press, or TV campaigns.

Yet it was the genre-defining ‘Mama Konda’, recorded in 1997 under the incarnation ‘Orinoko,’ that caused the biggest stir in the dance fraternity. A standard in the boxes of every DJ from Morales to Sasha, ‘Mama Konda’ was a Timo Maas Biog/ Page 2 percussive floorslayer that cemented Timo’s reputation as the hottest kid on the block, reaching the Top 20 in both UK and US club charts. Every record since the mighty ‘Mama Konda’ has sold around 10,000 copies, from its sequel ‘Vila Nova’ to Bush releases like ‘Eclipse’ and ‘Riding On A Storm.’

Meanwhile Timo’s remixes have been garnering acclaim from all quarters, from his mixes of Lustral’s ‘Everytime’ (Hooj) BT’s “Never Gonna Come Back Down” (Nettwerk) to ‘Dooms Night’ by Azzido Da Bass – “the mix that pulls together all the different pigeonholes in the UK scene right now,” according to one leading dance magazine. And so if you’ve set foot inside a niterie recently, the chances are you’ll have boogied to one of this man’s productions – as well as Hope Recordings and current label Perfecto, he has also recorded for Hooj Choons, FFRR and Bush.

Anthony Pappa @ EXIT, Lithuania ,5.9.2009

Hailing from Melbourne Australia, 26 year old Anthony Pappa is leading the pack of new young DJ’s while taking over the world with his hard progressive sound.

Pappa cut his DJing teeth in Melbourne at the tender age of 13 at a friends birthday party then went on to win a DMC mixing competition at 15 which gave him the opportunity to play in clubs all over Australia. After meeting Sasha, John Digweed and Dave Seaman whilst playing on the same bills in Australia, Anthony came to the realisation that the only way to further his career was to move half way around the world to Britain, a big step at only 21, but the gamble has paid off. Anthony had to accept the fact that after playing to crowds of over 8000 people in Australia, when he arrived in Britain he would have to wait and work his way up the ladder and this he has done.

Pappa established himself over here playing wide ranging sets of funky tech- house and non commercial trance which earned him the honour of mixing Renaissance Volume Two and the Best of Platipus albums in 1999. Alongside his DJing, Anthony has been producing in the studio under various guises, scoring a top twenty hit by layering the vocal from Power Circles, A Little Love A Little Life, over his remix of Offshore by Chicane and seeing chart action once again as one half of Freefall (with Alan Bremner of Brothers In Rhythm) with the track Skydive on Stress records, more recently picked up by Renaissance for a re-release.

Recently Anthony has been working with Barry Gilbey of Sheffield based Choo Choo Records after a chance meeting when Anthony’s usual studio partner was unavailable to finish a remix of “I Trance You” by Gypsy. Anthony’s relationship with Choo Choo has gone from strength to strength and he has mixed their first compilation album, Choo Choo Volume One, which is due for release in September 2000.

A firm believer in letting his music and mixing speak for itself, Anthony during a recent DJ magazine interview commented “When the needle drops the bullshit stops. That’s it, end of story, period” and it is a banner that Anthony will continue to carry forward and believe in during his now inevitable rise to the very top.

Anthony’s talent and potential are now well bounded exponents on the dance music scene, so much so that Andy Horsfield and James Todd from Boxed/Global Underground recognised his unique talent and kicked off their brand new “Nu – Breed” series by asking Anthony to mix the flagship release in the series.

Taking full advantage of the summer season, Anthony has recently travelled to Israel, the USA, Ibiza, Hungary and Scandinavia receiving rapturous responses and ovations wherever he travels, next stop Mars. But has being based in Britain changed Anthony? Well he’s discovered his long lost five-a-side skills, still hates the warm beer, can’t stand the motorways but loves the clubs and after all that’s what is important, but lets not talk about the weather.
