France’s most wanted radio host and selector, Ivan Smagghe stands at the crossroads between glamorous parisian hype and musical integrity.
His Test radio show and compilations imposed a new vision of leftfield electronica on Radio Nova and his programming for the two past years has been a faultless example of quality eclecticness. Though Smagghe hails from the early days of the Parisian underground – both through his connection with the defunct Rough Trade record shop and remixing contributions on various formats – he came back to music production in 2001 by launching his own Set imprint.

Like a lot of dance music producers, Berlin’s Ellen Allien has had her hands in just about every aspect of her field. Allien’s immersion into dance music began during an extended stay in London, at the height of the acid house phenomenon. Shortly after returning home she got into DJing, and by 1993 she had spun at Fischlabor, Tresor, and a number of other significant clubs. Throughout the remainder of the ’90s, she hosted programs on Berlin’s Kiss FM, worked at the Delirium record shop, operated a label called Braincandy, and threw a number of parties called BPitch Control, which led to her label of the same name. She became a noted producer and issued a series of full-lengths – Stadtkind (2001), Berlinette (2003), Thrills (2005) and together with Apparat Orchestra of Bubbles (2006).

As one of the main protagonists behind the so-called Mannheim sound, Nick has exploded on to the scene in 2008 with a string of releases on Cecille, 8Bit, murmur and Supernature – with the recently released ‘Dubnoise’ EP and ‘Television’, in particular, proving absolutely huge with DJ’s around the world.
Not content with simply making great music, as the owner of the Cecille and 8Bit labels, Nick has developed a talent as a taste-maker and overseen an amazing year for his labels as releases from the likes of Johnny D, SiS, Markus Fix, Robert Dietz, Lemos and Kreon have propelled many of these artists on to the global stage.
His work on his own labels as caught the eye of many and as a result the next months hold in store output on Liebe*Detail, Get Physical, Mobilee and murmur. In the biggest news of all, his debut album on, naturally, Cecille Records is due to hit in spring 2009.
